Sweet Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum)
Sweet Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum)
Eutrochium purpureum, more commonly known as Sweet Joe Pye Weed, Purple Joe-Pye Weed or Sweetscented Joe Pye Weed, is an herbaceous perennial plant in the Asteraceae family.
It is native to eastern and central North America, from Ontario east to New Hampshire and south as far as Florida, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
If you enjoy its sun loving cousin Joe Pye Weed, but have more shade than sun? This tall woodland native is a must have! It grows extremely well when partnered with other shade loving native plants such as Early and Late Figwort, American Bellflower, and Gold Eye Susans!
The purplish flowers are produced in large loose, convex shaped compound corymbiform arrays. Plants bloom mid to late summer and attract much activity from insects that feed on the nectar produced by the flowers.
Many species of butterflies, moths, bees, and flies visit the flowers.
Sweet Joe Pye Weed will act as a magnet to Monarchs and Swallowtails as well as hummingbirds, and native bees will mob its blossoms which burst with vanilla scented nectar.
It is larval host to: The Eupatorium Borer Moth (Carmenta bassiformis), The Red Groundling Moth (Perigea xanthioides), The Ruby Tiger Moth (Phragmatobia fuliginosa), and The Three-Lined Flower Moth (Schinia trifascia).
The larvae of Calycomyza flavinotum, a leaf miner fly has also been known to create blotch-shaped mines on the leaves.
Sweet Joe Pye Weed is listed as present but rare in most counties of the states of Delaware and Vermont, as rare in a few counties of Mississippi, and one county each of South Dakota and Louisiana.
