Formerly named Solidago ptarmicoides, and newly designated scientifically as Oligoneuron album this native wildflower is more than worthy of your consideration in your dryer, full sun locations!
Commonly named Upland White Goldenrod, Prairie Goldenrod, White Flat-top Goldenrod, Upland White Aster, or Upland White Solidago is a stunning and unique looking, native North American perennial flowering plant in the expansive Asteraceae family!
It is native to the central and eastern Canada (from New Brunswick to Manitoba) and parts of the United States (mostly Great Lakes region, the Northeast, the Ozarks, and the northern Great Plains, with isolated populations in Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, and scattered locations in the Southeast.
Upland White Goldenrod is distinctive within the genus in its display of white to cream-colored flowers, it’s bobbing heads arranged in a flat-topped corymb (Flowers in a corymb structure can either be parallel, or alternate, and form in either a convex, or flat form) rather than in an elongated raceme.
A singular plant can sometimes produce as many as 50 small heads. Its eaves are narrow and linear, often rather stiff. The species prefers dry, shallow sandy soils and grassy meadows, rocky outcrops and stony blufftops.
The plant is listed as endangered in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Tennessee, listed as rare in Indiana, and as presumed extirpated (locally extinct) in Ohio.
