Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata), otherwise called The American Vervain, and Swamp Verbena, is a beatiful flowering plant in the vervain family, Verbenaceae.
Blue Vervain is a striking perennial herbaceous plant that has opposite, simple leaves which have double-serrate margins, borne on stiffly erect, branching square spires. It’s numerous ascending purple flowers appear to climb throughout the summer, with the summer being over just as the last flower blooms on the spires tip.
This is a common plant that occurs across North America. It is hardy and drought resistant. Blue Vervain is a larval host to the stunning, Common Buckeye Butterfly.
