Large Flowered Beardtongue (Penstemon grandiflorus)
Penstemon grandiflorus, more commonly called Large-Flowered Beardtongue or more simply, Large Beardtongue, is a perennial flowering plant native to mostly just the central swath of the United States.
Large Flowered Beardtongue enjoys full sun, to partial shade, as well as poor soil conditions such as soil containing higher levels of rocky, sandy substrate.
At maturity, this gorgeous native is emblazoned with tubular pinkish purple blooms which bust profusely for just a few weeks in May and June.
Coinciding with this bloom is the arrival of this plants most energetic pollinator, Hummingbirds. Many native bees and butterflies visit these plants frequently as they provide high quality nectar that refills rapidly enough to feed everyone despite the possibility extremely dry conditions.
The Lakota name for this plant is kimi'milia tawana'hca, butterfly flower. The Dakota people are known for using the boiled root for chest pain. Other native people made a pulp from the crushed roots to treat toothaches from cavities, using the pulp to fill the cavity for treatment of pain.
Large Flowered Beardtongue is a rare sight in the wild, and is threatened or endangered in a few states within its native range, such as Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, and New Mexico.
Humans have also helped to spread this plant beyond its native range, so it is likely with our help, we can reinforce its presence in its traditional range. Humans have introduced this plant to the states of Ohio, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
